- LILLYBING: Wairarapa woman Rachel Patricia Namana has admitted the manslaughter of the Wairarapa toddler known as Lillybing in court today.
- CORRECTIONS REPORT: Plans to cut the number of prisoners by almost 900 are contained in a new Government report announced by corrections Minister Matt Robson today.
- CHILD MENTAL HEALTH: Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland is expanding its services to cater for the growing number of children requiring mental health services.
- IWI DEVELOPMENT: 800 Tuhoe people have welcomed Government officials to their Eastern BoP marae for the first time in 30 years, to accept $400 million Government money for an iwi development plan.
- FIJI: Deposed Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Choudhry has now lost the support of both of his former Co-Deputy Prime Ministers. And rebel Fiji military troops who took over military barracks after last year’s coup have been fined $10 each after pleading guilty to charges of unlawful assembly.
- CHEMICAL INCIDENT: Five people have been taken to hospital from West Auckland after an incident involving chemical fumes.
- US ENERGY: Critical attacks have come from conservationists and political rivals over President George W. Bush’s oil exploration and power generation plans for the United States.
- GUNMAN: The US Secret Service detained a man found with a gun in a park where President Bush was jogging.
- FRAUD CONVICTION: A South Auckland jury found a man guilty of defrauding more than 400 people of over $300,000.
- WELLINGTON RAPE: Police are investigating a rape in central Wellington late last night, the ninth sex attack in the central city in the past three months. Police are urging women walking in the city at night to take extra caution.
- ARMY RAPE: A Jury in the Palmerston North District Court is still deliberating in the case of an army officer accused of raping a fellow officer.
- CASINO COSTS: The Casino Control Authority is demanding $126,000 in costs against 14 anti-casino campaigners who appealed against the Authority granting a casino license in Hamilton, including the Mayor and city councillors.
- SCIENCE PRIZE: Masterton born Nobel Chemistry Prize winner Alan McDermott has received New Zealand’s highest science prize, the Royal Society of NZ’s Rutherford Medal.
