POPE: Pope John Paul II has made history by becoming the first pontiff to visit and pray inside a Mosque. Pope John Paul
visited the tomb of John the Baptist in the Mosque in Damascas. Syria’s senior Mufti asked for pressure to be put on
Israel.
ISRAEL: Meanwhile a US inquiry led by George Mitchell has issued a report calling for confidence measures. The
Palestinians have accepted the report but Israel has rejected it.
GE BABIES: The clinical director at National Women’s hospital says the safety of a US GE technique used for the birth of
30 babies in the US is not assured.
NATIONAL PRESIDENCY: The challenger for National Party President Michelle Boag is putting her round two defeat in the
Auckland regional competition behind her.
LONDON BOMBING: Scotland Yard has warned of the dangers of a terrorist bombing campaign in the lead up to UK general
elections following an explosion in a London post office. Noone has claimed responsibility.
MACEDONIA: Shelling has resumed in parts of Macedonia held as strongholds by Albanian rebels. European envoys are trying
to discourage Macedonia from declaring a state of war.
STUDENT FEES: The Medical Association is concerned that if student fees go up more next year then more graduate doctors
will be driven overseas.
DROUGHT: Drought affected Malborough Farmers are hoping that more rain will follow 10mm over the weekend. However the
MET Service says there is little hope of more rain this week.
UKRAINE MINE ACCIDENT: Nine Ukrainian miners are dead following a methane blast in a coal mine. In two other mine
accidents three more miners were killed.
BROCCOLI VS CANCER: Doctors have found what they think is an active ingredient in brussel sprouts and broccoli that
prevents colon cancer.
