- FOSTER CARE: The Government is to consider paying some foster parents as part of a review of foster care funding. The
union representing foster parents says funding for fostering is inadequate. Social Services Minister Steve Maharey says
he is in favour of paying some foster parents small money.
- GROUNDED 767S: The first of Ansett Australia’s grounded Boeing 767s is expected to be cleared to fly in a couple of
hours. Inspection of the remaining nine 767s could take several weeks.
- DAY CARE BLUES: Research in the United States has found that children who spend a lot of time each week in day care
are more likely to become aggressive bullies by the age of four. NZ research has made similar findings.
- FIRE FIGHTER NEGOTIATIONS: The Fire Fighters Union says it may be willing to trade money for conditions in its
negotiating with the Fire Service Commission.
- LITTLE INDUSTRIAL ACTION: Official figures show that the first months under the new Employment Relations Act have seen
the fewest work stoppages in a decade.
- GENERIC AIDS DRUGS: The South African government says it will move quickly to allow cheap generic AIDS drugs into the
country after pharmaceutical companies agreed to stop their move to block a 1997 law which allowed the importing of
cheap drugs regardless of who held the patents.
- DVT: The number of New Zealanders claiming to be affected by Deep Vein Thrombosis from flying long haul flights has
reached more than forty.
- NATIONAL RETIREMENT POLICY: A higher retirement age and a discount card for people over 65 are among the
superannuation policies National is considering for the next election.
- WHALE SANCTUARY: Japan’s delegate at a whaling conference in Samoa says the New Zealand and Australian proposal for a
South Pacific whaling sanctuary is likely to fail.
- HUMAN CLONING: The British Government is bringing forward legislation to ban the creation of human babies by cloning.
- KOREAN WAR COMMERORATION: More than 600 Korean War veterans including almost 50 from New Zealand gathered at the
United nations cemetery in Korea today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Korean War.
- JAMIESON MURDER CASE: Police in Auckland will interview up to 50 people nominated as suspects in the killing of Marie
Jamieson.
- ANTARCTIC RESCUE: Two Canadian planes waiting in Southern Chile for Antarctic weather to clear before flying to the
South Pole to pick up an American researcher suffering pancreitis.
- NAPIER ASSAULTS: Three men have been arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm after the assault of two men in
Napier last night.
