Drunk In Charge – Monteith’s Hangover – Toffee Pop Sabotage – Foot and Mouth – Cop Resigns – Greymouth Tornado
- DRUNK IN CHARGE: Speaker Jonathan Hunt says he’s seen MPs return to the debating chamber after drinking and said things they never remembered in the morning. The confession comes as the spotlight is on the behaviour of MPs. Nandor Tanczos, who says he was slammed for saying MPs were drunk in charge of the country, feels somewhat vindicated by what the Speaker said. The issue of alcohol and national politics is rarely talked about. Mr Hunt had summoned party whips to bring an end to the muckraking in Parliament and the dragging of MPs’ families into the debate.
- MONTEITH’S HANGOVER: Monteith’s workers are tonight once again battling DB after the company backed down on closing the West Coast brewery – Greymouth staff who lost their jobs last week say they are under an illegal lockout. DB says some brewing will be done in Greymouth, but they say it isn’t economic to brew most of the product so far from markets.
- TOFFE POP SABOTAGE: Police are investigating a possible sabotage after a 15-year-old Auckland girl ended up in hospital after eating a toffee pop with pieces of metal in it.
- FOOT AND MOUTH: UK authorities are considering vaccinating against foot and mouth as a last resort if they cannot stamp the disease out through slaughter and burning. Nearly 700,000 animals have been slaughtered, but that is less than 1% of the national herd.
- COP RESIGNS: Former Police Superintendent Brett Marsh has resigned after pleading guilty to a drink-driving charge.
- GREYMOUTH TORNADO: A tornado ripped through Greymouth this morning damaging houses and cutting off power.
