Fletcher Energy Sale – Maritime Fishing – Missing Tramper – Crowe Kidnap Plot - MIR Splashdown
- FLETCHER ENERGY SALE: The break up of Fletcher Challenge has given a boost to the share market. Last night Fletcher energy shareholders voted to sell Fletcher energy to Shell and Apache for $4 billion. Some say the price tag was too low. Shell and Apache shares both shot up after the sale. The chairman of Peak Petroleum said he is naturally disappointed at the decision, but said they will prepare to bid for assets that must be sold under order of the Commerce Commission. Fletcher Energy closed trading up 5 cents today.
- MARITIME FISHING: The Government has thrown out a plan to make people have to pay for a maritime fishing license. Fishing organisations say they want to see public fishing rights strengthened.
- MISSING TRAMPER: Christchurch postie Harry Smith held out for 17 days in the bush with a broken hip waiting to be rescued.
- CROWE KIDNAP PLOT: The FBI has confirmed it is investigating a plot to kidnap New Zealand born actor Russell Crowe. Crowe’s beefed up his personal security. He’s using decoys and false travel schedules.
- MIR SPLASHDOWN: An plan is being hatched for the imminent splashdown of the Russian MIR space station in the pacific Ocean, about 4000km from the South Island. Prime Minister Helen Clark says the Government will be keeping an eye on it. Planes and ships will be advised to avoid the area.
