WHEELIE-BIN VICTIM FUNERAL: Sister Emily sings “Let It Be” at Anna North’s funeral. A friend remembers the events that
led up to the tragic accident on the world’s steepest street. Friends spoke of Anna’s sense of fun. Police say charges
will not be laid in relation to the accident. North was a Catholic.
BBC BOMBING: Film footage shows the detonation of a big bomb outside the BBC centre. A taxi packed with explosives was
bought in North London the day before the bombing. The bombing is thought to have been an operation of the “Real IRA” a
dissident group which disowns the IRA ceasefire.
DR MURDER DEPOSITION: A depositions hearing is being held into whether Dr Christopher Simpson should be tried for the
murder of his mother Florence Simpson. An ambulanceman and policeman described a hostile Dr Simpson at the bedside of
his mother. Dr Simpson says his mother strangled herself and that she was not a fan of euthanasia.
ST JAMES SEARCH: A search is underway for a man missing on the St James walkway near Murchison.
FREAK ACCIDENT: A freak accident involving a cherry-picker being towed behind a car in New Lyn Auckland is being blamed
for a death.
SI CAR SMASHES: Two people are dead in an accident north of Oamaru, and another two are dead following a crash into the
Haast River on the West Coast.
FIRE STATION FIRE: A fire station was completely burned down last night.
PORTUGAL BUS TRAGEDY: Almost 70 people are feared drowned following a bridge collapse in Portugal.
ISRAEL: Violence in the Middle East has taken a frightening turn with a suicide bombing in an Israeli coastal city.
Three were killed and 12 were injured in the accident. This is the third bombing in a week. Nobody has claimed
responsibility for today’s bombing yet. Over the weekend six Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli Soldiers.
After today’s bombing a passing Arab was severely beaten. The country is on
CENSUS: An anonymous email is winging its way through cyber-space suggesting that people put down “JEDI” as their
religion in tomorrow’s census. It is legal to do so apparently and Statisticians say that even if 8000 say “JEDI” it
will not make it an official religion. Everyone must fill out a census form tomorrow night or risk a $500 fine.
TELECOM CABLE: A standoff between Maori and Telecom at Hokio Beach is now over. Over the weekend an agreement was
reached.
TV WATCHING: An ACNeilsen survey finds that people watch the equivalent of eight years of TV in a 70-year life.
CABBAGE TREES: A cause of mysterious cabbage tree deaths has been found by Landcare scientists. The scientists haven’t
yet found a cure to the disease. Nor do they know what insect is involved in spreading the disease.
