- BOMBINGS: Israel and Britain are on bomb alert. A suicide bomb in Israel that killed three and injured fifty others
has raised fears of a new wave of bombing. No one is claiming responsibility for the attack, but Palestinian group Hamas
says it has 10 suicide bombers ready for the new Israeli government. Meanwhile, London is also on the lookout for
bombers, after a blast outside the BBC headquarters police believe is the work of the Real IRA, a hitherto little known
dissident Irish militant group. One theory for the attack is that it is revenge for a BBC item on Northern Irish
terrorism that named members of the group.
- GRAND PRIX DEATH: Mechanical failure is being for the accident that killed a race official at the Melbourne Grand Prix
formula One race yesterday, but calls have been made for a general review of safety trackside. The man was killed by a
flying wheel from a crashed racecar.
- SIMPSON DEPOSITION HEARINGS: An Auckland doctor is being charged with murdering his mother, Florence Simpson, by
strangling her with her own morphine drip cord. Ambulance officers on the scene said they were immediately suspicious
when they encountered the man, who was visibly agitated, after being called out to the scene.
- MICHAEL BOTTRILL: Lawyers for the doctor at the center of the Gisbourne Cervical Cancer Inquiry, Michael Bottrill, are
back in court.
- STATE HOUSING: The Government is adding extra rooms to nearly 1000 state hoses, at a cost of $60m, in an effort to
reduce the incidence of contagious diseases through overcrowding and poverty.
- OTAGO GROWTH: A new review of regional growth paints a rosy picture for Otago, but finds Auckland the slowest growing
region.
