FIJI GOVERNMENT TOLD TO GO: Fiji is this evening involved in a constitutional changeover again. But this time it is
legal. The Court of
FATAL WHEELYBIN PRANK: Baldwin St in Dunedin, the world’s steepest St, was the scene of an early morning accident
following the Cricket International at Carisbrook. A woman inside the wheelybin died. Her companion was injured.
13 DIE IN TRAIN SMASH: A freak series of events led to a train crash in Britain which led to the deaths of at least 13.
A car knocked a passenger train into the path of a coal train. The collision happened in darkness. The goods train
stayed on the track. Parts of the passenger express simply disintegrated on impact. Survivors described the accident.
The debris from the accident was spread all over Great Heck. Late in the day the first bodies were removed. An
investigation continues tonight.
EARTHQUAKE: Bill Gates is forced to run for cover in a Seattle quake measuring 6.8 on the richter scale.
CHILD WELFARE REPORT: A report is calling for improvements in the way CYFS looks after Kiwi children. The report is
questioning the wisdom of placing children with family members. Judge Mick Brown says that there is a funding crisis and
also a societal crisis involved in the problems faced by CYFS. Steve Maharey says that children’s welfare will be a top
funding priority in this year’s budget.
FIJI COURT DECISION: Fiji’s Parliament is expected to announce shortly that it is disolved. Former members of the
People’s Coalition Government are delighted with the court decision out today. The ruling returns power to the
Government of Mahendra Chaudhry. He is presently in India but will return shortly. Local journalists say they are
expecting unrest tonight in the wake of the decision.
CRICKET: Pakistan’s speedy bowler is being sent home with an injury, chased by chucking allegations. New Zealand last
night beat Pakistan and received adulation from their long-suffering fans.
