Foot And Mouth – Skyhawks – Justice System – Mother Sought – CYF Slammed – Frozen Baby
- FOOT AND MOUTH: There are fears that foot and mouth disease may be spreading faster than thought in Britain. 12 farms
have been sealed off. Slaughtered carcasses are being burned off. There are fears the disease could have reached Europe.
Stock imported from Britain has been slaughtered in Germany and Netherlands.
In New Zealand, meat producers see enormous export opportunities, with the double whammy of the BSE and foot and mouth
disease affecting European herds. There is, however, a risk to consumer confidence in meat in general.
- SKYHAWKS: The airforce is cutting the Skyhawks’ flying hours to save costs. National says the cutbacks show the
government is preparing to scrap the Skyhawks.
- JUSTICE SYSTEM: Major changes could be ahead for how we dish out justice. A recommendation says 11 to one hung juries
should be considered a verdict. Another recommendation says jurors should be better reimbursed for their service. Not
everyone thinks 11 to one verdicts are a good idea.
- MOTHER SOUGHT: Police are trying to find the mother of a dead baby found in the Auckland Domain. Police are appealing
to the public for help. They believe the baby died during childbirth.
- CYF SLAMMED: Child Youth and Family have been slammed over the case of the toddler who was beaten, receiving permanent
brain damage, by her caregiver grandmother. Commissioner for Children Roger McClay says the case highlights the urgent
need for skilled social workers.
- FROZEN BABY: A Canadian toddler was found frozen in snow, her heart stopped, and revived. She crawled out of her
mother’s bed and crawled into the snow outside. The girl still faces some risk of frostbite, but her brain is fine.
