- SPORTING REVIEW: For months, Kiwi sporting heroes and officials have looked sport in New Zealand and what needs to be
changed. A $90m package is recommended to get New Zealanders off the couch. One recommendation is to extend the school
day by half an hour to get kids more active. The report found schools’ attitude to health and fitness is inadequate. The
report recommends the Hillary Commission and Sports Foundation be replaced by one organisation, Active New Zealand.
National Sport Spokesperson Murray McCully is welcoming the report but says he hopes sporting stars are not forgotten in
the effort to get a greater number of New Zealanders active. Once a decision is made it could take five years before the
changes are implemented.
- ONE4B: Police and health officials have seized supplies of One4B, the party drug linked to four hospitalisations in
just days. The main ingredient is apparently a solvent used in CD cleaner. The distributor says the product is an
organic solvent.
- LISA BLAIKIE: A man is in custody charged with the murder of Timaru hitchhiker Lisa Blaikie, almost a year after her
body was found.
- MARGARET LYNNE BAXTER: More charges have been laid against the man accused of murdering Margaret Lynne Baxter, after
she went missing while running in Hastings. The man now faces rape and assault with a vehicle charges.
- MURDERED CHILD: A three-year-old girl in Australia was snatched from her bed and killed by a 13-year-old boy. The
small community is reeling in shock from the murder. The girl’s body was found in an empty block metres from the girl’s
house, and a knife believed to be the murder weapon was found nearby. The murder accused, who lives near the girl,
appeared in youth court today accused of the murder.
- MIDDLETON ON TRIAL: Mark Middleton is on trial, accused of threatening to kill Paul Dally, the murderer of Karla
Cardnow. Mr Dally is still in prison serving a life sentence for the Cardnow murder, he has twice been denied parole.
