Napier Paedophile – Inflation On High – Adoption Controversy – Rugby Coverage – Venus Reveals
- NAPIER PAEDOPHILE: Napier police are taking children who have been found in the house of a convicted paedophile into custody, using a little used law which allows them to take children into custody where they reasonably feel the child’s safety is in danger. The man, a 47-year-old denies being a paedophile. He says he is gay. The man says six police visits since Christmas and negative publicity have made him fearful for his life. The man invites adolescent boys to watch videos at his house, and allegedly plies them with alcohol and cigarettes. Last year Justice Minister Phil Goff called for a system to track sex offenders.
- INFLATION ON HIGH: Inflation is at a 5½ year high on the back of high petrol prices last year. Inflation was at 4 percent for the whole of last year. CPI figures released by Statistics New Zealand today showed inflation at 1.2 percent for the three months ending December.
- ADOPTION CONTROVERSY: Two six-month old girls adopted by a British couple are at the centre of an international adoption scandal. The children were sold on the Internet to an American couple, where they stayed for two months, before the natural mother changed her mind and took them back, then sold them on to the British couple. CYFS says in New Zealand it is not illegal to find and adopt on the Internet, but it is illegal to pay to adopt.
- RUGBY COVERAGE: TVNZ will jointly cover the All Black test matches this year with Telstra Saturn. Saturn will have the live rights, and TVNZ will show the delayed coverage. Some bars, who pay big money for Sky TV, who previously held the rights, to show matches are upset.
- VENUS REVEALS: Women’s on court fashion at the Australian Open has had some commentators gasping. Some have watched on in disapproval of Venus Williams’ semi-revealed breasts in her latest Reebok outfit, some are just afraid she’s going to pop out of it.
