US ELECTION CONFUSION: The US Supreme Court has issued a ruling which appears to be a setback to Vice President Al Gore.
The court has set aside a ruling from the Florida Supreme Court which allowed recounts to be accepted. Meanwhile a judge
in Florida has put on hold his judgement on whether two recounts should go ahead.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: Proposals to amend the Health and Safety in Employment legislation have been put forward by the
government. The Employers Federation says the changes are not necessary.
PETROL PRICES: Oil companies say fuel prices may drop if the Kiwi dollar stays high and oil prices continue to fall. The
CEO of the Road Transport Forum says it may take time to affect the transport industry.
OIL PRICES RISE: Brent Crude futures have risen 52 cents on rising fears relating to Iraqi decisions to cut supply.
ISRAEL: Yasser Arafat has condemned violence around Bethlehem in which numerous Palestinians were injured.
SEALORD: BIL says it has found a buyer for its 50% stake in Sealord. The Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission has
announced the deal as a joint venture. The Overseas Investment Commission has yet to approve the sale.
AUCKLAND RAIL: Auckland’s Regional Forum say they still want to take over the Auckland rail network and have not given
up on central government help. However they say that Friday is still the day to talk turkey to ministers about the
proposal.
SPACE STATION: The crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour have attached two giant solar panel wings to the Space Station,
one of which has not properly unfurled.
CRICKET: South Africa have won the second test against NZ by seven wickets. The South Africans only had to chase a
modest target to win.
