AUSSIE IMMIGRATION CONCERNS: Australia says 3rd country immigrants gaining access to NZ and then moving on to Australia
is beginning to be a problem. Australian Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddick says NZ ought to be worried about the
number of people leaving. The PM says that the people have been leaving because of the economy and now it is getting
better they will stay.
KIWI DOLLAR: The NZ Dollar is seen as having turned the corner and is expected to rise steadily over coming months.
Goldman Sachs is expecting the Kiwi to rise to 53 US cents
PREDATORY FERRY PRICING: Manufacturers have backed a call by the Road Transport Forum to have Tranz Rail’s ferry freight
fees investigated. Tranz Rail denies the allegations.
US ELECTIONS: George W. Bush’s legal team have stepped up their attacks on Al Gore’s arguments. Bush has presented a
mathematician with complicated theories.
ISRAEL: Israel has dropped its initial reluctance to cooperate with an international investigation into violence in the
Holy Land. The decision to cooperate follows a 45 minute phone conversation between President Clinton and PM Barak.
SEX EDUCATION: The Government’s decision to have compulsory sex education in schools has been supported by the Family
Planning Association.
GM INQUIRY: Organic growers say that the introduction of GM technology to NZ would have a catastrophic effect on their
industry. They say they think it is unbelievable that introduction of these things is being considered.
FISHING: So many anglers have made submissions on fees for fishing in the sea that the Minister has had to push back the
deadline back a month.
