GREEN HEALTH CHANGES: The Green Party’s health spokeswoman says Green amendments will improve health legislation. The Greens say they support the legislation but believe it needs significant improvements. The government says it will vote against a separate public health body.
US ELECTION: Lawyers for Al Gore have gone to court in Florida to contest the outcome of the Presidential election. George W. Bush says he has won. Democrats say it is their duty to uphold the constitution and challenge the result.
TAINUI: The HSBC Bank has agreed to meet with Tainui to discuss a $14 million loan.
ISRAEL: Some senior Palestinian officials have called on the uprising to be stepped up to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Islamic militant group Hamas has asked for a holy war for control of Jerusalem.
MURRAY STRETCH KILLER APPEAL: Colleagues of murdered police officer Murray Stretch are upset about a decision to reduce his killer’s minimum non—parole sentence by two years to 16 years. The Police Association says the reduction in the sentence is a kick in the guts.
MICHELLE BOAG: National Party members are looking at an eight month contest for the presidency of the party. Auckland businesswoman Michelle Boag says she wants to rebuild the party and improve its resources.
SOCIAL WORK: The Department of Child Youth and Family is planning a shake-up of how it supports front-line staff. Social workers will get more support says a spokesman.
SERIAL ARSONIST: The police in Paraparaumu fear the work of a serial arsonist could lead to someone being hurt or killed. There have been a couple of serious fires and lots of small fires recently.
AUSSIES UPSET BY APPLES: Up to 80% of businesses will shut in the Australian town of Shepherdtown today to protest the importation of NZ apples.
