BRAIN DRAIN: A survey has found that 82% of Medical Students plan to be working overseas within two years of graduating.
Student Nicky Lawrey says that financially staying in NZ is not an option. Medical Students Association says that the NZ
health system is suffering because of student debt. Tonight the results of the survey are being presented to a Select
Committee. In the survey 54% of students plan to work mainly overseas. The government is investigating chasing student
loan debts to Australia and the UK. But the students say there is more to it than money. The Select Committee will
recommend a plan to deal with the problem to Parliament.
HIV TEACHER FACES SEX CHARGES: A 42-year-old teacher with HIV has appeared in court charged with multiple sex offences
against six young boys. The man has bail, name suppression and the name of the school is also suppressed. The man has
been given strict bail conditions.
TERRI KING MURDER VERDICT: An unemployed male model has been found not-guilty of the murder of Terri King in the Tararua
Ranges last year. William Haanstra’s sister was delighted in court with the verdict. A prosecution witness was less
happy. The defence case was based on King being killed by a drug importing syndicate based in South Africa. King was a
well known figure in Wellington night life and worked in a strip bar. Hannstra remains in jail on unrelated charges.
LOST KEEL: The keel of the Oracle remains on the bottom of the Hauraki Gulf with no one knowing why. Oracle contested
the Louis Vuitton Cup final last year. The team plans to retrieve the keel if possible. Skipper Chris Dixon says there
is other damage to the yacht other than losing its keel. Although it is a big setback to the team Dixon says it will not
alter their plans.
US ELECTIONS: The US Election rollercoaster continues with Miami-Dade county deciding to abandon its recount. Meanwhile
George Bush is appealing the Florida Supreme Court’s decision to the Federal Supreme Court. The Miami-Dade canvassing
board says it hasn’t enough time. In Broward County Gore has picked up 54 votes. In Palm Beach County dimpled ballots
will be counted.
ISRAEL: Tit for tat violence continued in the Middle East today beginning with a bombing attack on a bus. Israel
responded with rocket attacks on Ramalah. Both sides are accusing each other of barbarism.
SCHOOL CERT ENGLISH: Thousands of Kiwi kids took the School Certificate English exam today. The first question asked a
tricky question about a book by James McNeish. None of the adults asked the question in Wellington streets had any idea
what the answer was. Student reactions were mixed.
BLACK SHIRTS FOR BLACK CAPS: NZ has a new look for its one day cricketers – black shirts. The new fabric reflects light
and features ventilation panels. One day teams have tried lots of colours over time.
