ISRAEL: A car bomb attack has killed at least two people and caused horrific injuries to 36 Israeli bus passengers. The Israeli PM is blaming the Palestinians for the attack and is vowing to get even.
US ELECTION: Al Gore has received a big blow to his hopes of overtaking George Bush in the race for the White House. Officials in Miami Dade county have called off a hand recount saying they do not have time to complete the count. Gore is hoping to get enough votes in recounts in three counties to win the Presidential election.
POLICE SAVINGS: The Police Association has hit out at attempts to cut police spending by the Police Minister. Plans to save money at the Police Training College would impact badly on recruitment says an association spokesman. Hawkins says there will be no budget cuts it is just about spending money wisely.
PERU: Peru’s congress leader has been sworn in as Peru’s interim President. The new President is seen as a moderate.
WOMEN’S PRISON: Two sites have been shortlisted for a new 150 bed women’s prison in Auckland. The Ministry of Corrections is now beginning public consultation on the sites.
TONGAN GE RESEARCH: An Australian company has secured exclusive rights to conduct genetic research in Tonga into a couple of diseases.
AIR TRAVEL: A British Parliamentary report says that Air Lines should warn air line passengers about the risk of developing blood clots while travelling on long haul plane journeys.
ATHLETE DIES: A Czech runnner and multi-award winning Olympic medalist has died.
