Petrol Prices – Small Cars Get Safer – Middle East Conflict – Plane Death – Italian Mudslide – NSW Floods – Fiji Blacklist Busted - NCEA
PETROL PRICES: Petrol is going up again and will stay up over the Christmas break. Gull and Challenge are planning on keeping their prices down. All but Caltex of the big four have announced price rises in petrol prices. Auckland’s two biggest taxi companies have bumped up the cost of taxi fares by 10 cents a kilometer. Petrol station attendants say they are being abused by angry motorists.
SMALL CARS GET SAFER: Smaller cars are getting more attractive in petrol consumption and safer too. The LTSA say that small cars are getting better ratings in crash tests. Big cars are still safer usually however.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT: A sickening attack on a school bus on the Gaza strip sparked missile attacks from Israel on Gaza City. Israel say they responded in the same way anyone would have. Two adults were killed and several children were injured in the bomb attack.
PLANE DEATH: An American Airways staff member was killed when sucked out the door of a plane.
ITALIAN MUDSLIDE: Five people are missing after a mudslide in Italy.
NSW FLOODS: Tamworth is under water after the river burst its banks. Many crop farmers have lost everything. More than a dozen river systems are in flood. 200 people have been evacuated from eight towns. The rain keeps coming.
FIJI BLACKLIST BUSTED: The government has revealed that a person on their Fiji coup black list has managed to arrive in NZ for medical treatment.
NCEA: National is accusing the Government of dumbing down education. The government confirmed today that students will no longer receive exam marks under the new system. Nick Smith says it is a backward step. Trevor Mallard says that people will see the new system as an advance. A PPTA spokesman says the new system will be good as it will provide more information on performance. The changes are also opposed by a breakaway teachers group.
