FIJI: Fiji’s Deposed PM says the fate of Fiji rests with the deposed President Ratu Mara. Mahendra Chaudhry says that
the former President has to call a Parliament as explained in a court decision. The Military say they will determine
their response on the basis of the reaction of the Fijian people, and security considerations.
INDECISION 2000: Florida’s highest election official has asked the Supreme Court to order a halt in three hand recounts.
The Democrats say they are opposed to Katherine Harris’s attempts to stop the recounts. Harris also wants all legal
cases moved to one court. In another court decision today a judge decided that local officials should decide what
partial marks should be read of as votes in Palm Beach county.
ISRAEL: The toll of death in the last 24 hours in Israel is the highest in any period since the conflict began. At least
7 Palestinians have died. In one incident two young men were shot dead by soldiers who claimed to be shooting at
protestors feet.
BOAT EXPLOSION: Two injured seamen rescued from a cargo ship are now resting on Norfolk Island. The two men were injured
– and another killled – in an engine room explosion.
IRD APOLOGY: An Auckland couple who have received an apology from the IRD for a long battle about an incorrect tax
demand would now like some financial compensation.
EAST TIMOR: The PM’s of NZ and Australia will today swap notes on Indonesia and East Timor after both meeting with the
Indonesian President.
WHALING CONFERENCE: A controversial pro-whaling conference begins in Nelson today. More than 200 are attending the
conference which supports indigenous rights to whale and trade in whale products.
