PEACE SUMMIT: The Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will attend tonight’s summit in Egypt. Ahead of the summit the
Israelis have been continuing to talk tough. Palestinian and Israeli leaders are playing down the prospects of the
summit achieving any more than a halt in the violence. Egypt’s President, the US President and the UN Secretary General
will also be attending the summit. Russia is not invited, much to the disappointment of Russian President Vladimir
Putin, who assisted in getting the summit going.
CRICKET: The NZ Cricket team have beaten India in an international one-day knock-out cricket competition winning
themselves $630,000.
SQUASH: Lailani Joyce says she is exhausted after winning the British Open squash title.
ALLIANCE CONFERENCE: Alliance leader Jim Anderton is promising to deliver paid parental leave and a people’s bank by the
end of the first term of this government. Anderton told his party faithful that compromise would be necessary with
Labour.
SOLOMONS: The Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff says he is reasonably confident about the safety of proposed unarmed NZ
peace-monitors who may be stationed in the Solomon Islands. 10s rather than 100s of unarmed peace-monitors
STORM: The Lyttelton Port Company and Christchurch City Council say they are not responsible for the destruction of a
marina during a storm last Thursday.
EBOLA: Uganda has convened a national taskforce to try and control an outbreak of Ebola disease that has already killed
33 people.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT: The Service and Food Workers Union say they will get tough with employers who sexually harass their
staff.
