- PASSIVE SMOKING KILLER: Passive smoking is killing 388 New Zealanders a year, including 50 babies, according to new
research. The Health Ministry funded study puts second hand smoke at the top of the list of environmental killers.
- CORRECTIONS DEPT BLAMED: The lawyer for murderer Taffy Hotene and the family and friends of the woman he raped and
killed blame the Corrections Department for his being freed two thirds of the way through a 12-year sentence for rape
and sexual assaults.
- SUN HARSHER: New Zealanders who believe they have been sunburnt more easily in recent summers are probably right, the
National Institute of Water and Atmosphere Research says. Their research shows that peak erythemyl, or sunburning,
ultraviolet radiation had increased by more than 15 percent since ozone depletion began in the late 1970s.
- MOUSE IN LOAF: A mouse embedded in a loaf of bread and a frog in a bag of frozen peas were amongst the finds
investigated by Wellington food protection workers in the past year.
- JAMMED RIFLES: Several New Zealand soldiers involved in a fatal ambush with militiamen in East Timor suffered jammed
rifles, a problem the army is aware of, troops say.
