STAGFLATION: The two-headed economic monster of the 70s has been mentioned by the Governor of the Reserve Bank leaving the dollar at new record lows and share-markets reeling. Stagflation was part of the picture in the 1970s. Brash says he will not allow history to repeat itself. The mention of the S word had politicians in a spin. Stagflation was not Dr Brash’s only target today. Brash also said unions and employees should not demand pay rises. Brash now has three scenarios. Positive business confidence, negative business confidence or stagflation. Importers will be the first to feel the hit of the falling dollar. Home owners face the likelihood of rising interest rates. Investors in shares are also suffering. Businesses are also hurting. By raising stagflation he is certainly damaging government attempts to talk the economy up.
ISRAEL CONFLICT: The ceasefire agreed last night in Israel did not last long. Early morning Israeli forces withdrew from some areas. EMERGENCIES: A lunch time frenzy for emergency services. Coastguard have to rescue a boatman who lost his divers A stash of stolen chemicals leaked into the Heathcoat river. The fire service think they got to the spill in time. And a pharmacist is stabbed in the leg.
KINGZ DOG AD: Soccer Kingz ads involving a small dog which comes to some misfortune have been complained about by the SPCA. The team is refusing to pull the ads and says they are funny. It is a football joke and is not meant to upset anyone. The ads have been approved already.
DIABETES: 600 people have gathered for a conference on diabetes among indigenous peoples.
DESIGNER BABY: Doctors in the US have made their first designer baby. A baby boy born to donate marrow to his sister Molly who is suffering from leukemia. The medical team used technology to identify and select an embryo with identical bone marrow to his sister which stood the best chance of fixing her condition. The mother says she was planning on having another baby anyway.
