ISRAEL VIOLENCE: Israeli security forces opened fire from helicopters on the fourth day of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Condemnation of Israel has spread across the Arab world. In the last half hour authorities say they have reached agreement on ending the violence.
EMPLOYMENT LAW: Labour Minister Margaret Wilson says the Employment Relations Act – which comes into effect today - will take some time to bed down properly. Wilson says the Act’s success will depene
OLYMPICS: The Olympic Games ended in Sydney last night with a big closing ceremony. Midnight Oil wore “sorry” tee-shirts causing controversy. NZ’s biggest Olympic team picked up just four medals compared to Australia’s 56.
NELSON DEATHS: The police will this morning release the names and causes of deaths of a 33 year old woman and her three children found dead in Stoke, near Nelson.
SUPER: Detailed proposals for pre-funding retirement pensions will go to cabinet today. At present super costs 4.5% of GDP. Cabinet will not be allowed to un-pick the details. So far only the Greens have been consulted.
EAST TIMOR: Two UN Philippine peace-keepers have died in a road accident. They are the eighth peace-keepers to die. The PM who is in East Timor has indicated a pay rise for soldiers.
LOST DINGHY: Auckland Coastguard have spent the night looking for a dinghy lost in the Hauraki Gulf.
GOLF:Michael Campbell has won a golf competition in Europe, pocketing more than a million dollars.
CRICKET: Zimbabwe beat NZ this morning in one-day cricket.
