- WAIRARAPA ABUSE: Three people faced charges in court today over the death of a Carterton toddler, sparking angry
scenes. Two women faced manslaughter charges and the partner of one of the women faced a lesser charge. All were refused
bail. Police say there may be more charges.
- WHANGAREI ABUSE: In Whangarei, a grandmother pleaded guilty to abusing her granddaughter. The girl has permanent brain
damage from the abuse.
- HEALTH FUNDING: There is controversy over new criteria for the funding of health research. To receive funding,
recipients must say how their research will benefit Maori. The government says the provision is vital to “closing the
gaps” and improving Maori health.
- GOLDEN HANDSHAKE: The former Victoria University vice chancellor was paid out a large golden handshake after being
forced to resign.
