POWER CUTS AND STORMS: Snow and high winds have cut power to Hawkes Bay. Transpower says around 100,000 people are
affected. Central North Island roads are closed with snow. Late last night there were also power-cuts north of Auckland.
Police in Auckland say lots of trees were blown over.
OLYMPICS HOCKEY: More disappointment for the NZ women’s hockey team. The team drew with Spain 2 all after a goal 14
seconds from the end of the game. The coach was irate afterwards saying that four years of hard work could be spoiled by
one bad umpiring decision.
YUGOSLAVIA: At least 20,000 Yugoslavian opposition supporters have gathered to celebrate what they see as a victory
overt Slobodan Milosevic in central Belgrade.
CANCER INQUIRY: The National Party says a letter sent to the Gisborne Cancer Inquiry by the Minister of Health is a
mistake. The letter asks the inquiry to reconsider going to the High Court to obtain medical records.
EAST TIMOR: The top UN official in East Timor has described Indonesian attempts to disarm militia as pathetic.
PETROL PRICES: A local Shell representative says it is too early to say whether local petrol prices will fall following
falls in crude prices on the world market.
DOUBLE JEOPARDY: The law that a person cannot be retried for a crime after being acquitted by a jury is being
reconsidered. The Law Commission has issued a discussion paper on this.
NORTHLAND EMERGENCY SERVICES: The trust that runs Northland’s emergency helicopter has dropped its case against ACC. The
chairman of the trust says the trust had to weigh up the cost of High Court action against the chances of success.
MIDDLE EAST PEACE: The Israeli PM and Palestinian Leader have begun discussions at Mr Barak’s private home in
preparation for renewed negotiations in the US later this week.
