- SYDNEY OLYMPICS: Mark Todd in equestrian and Rob Waddell in single sculls are poised to break New Zealand’s medal
drought. 12 of the 38 entries in the cross-country section of the three-day equestrian event did not finish and New
Zealand’s Blyth Tait has pulled out of the three day event. Rob Waddell made an emphatic statement in his single sculls
semifinal, winning easily, two seconds clear of his nearest rival. Sonia Waddell is in the women’s single sculls final,
finishing fourth overall. Aaron McImtosh and Barbara Kendall both won races in board sailing today.
- DOPING AT OLYMPICS: The amount of records broken in swimming has prompted the coach of the United States women’s
swimming team to say he thinks swimmers are using performance enhancing drugs.
- SORENSeN GUILTY OF FRAUD: Dave Sorensen, former New Zealand softball team captain, has been found guilty of fraud and
has been sentenced to 200 hours community service. He siphoned funds off gaming machines, and used the money for
softball related things.
- OVERSTAYER AMNESTY: The Australian Government has attacked New Zealand’s one off amnesty for overstayers, saying it
opens a backdoor for illegal immigrants into Australia. It is expected 8000 overstayers will now be able to live in New
Zealand legally.
- MILFORD GONDOLA: An ambitious plan is underway for an arial cableway between Queenstown and remote Milford Sound. It
would be the longest gondola of its type in the world. It will be months before it is known if the project gets the
go-ahead.
