OLYMPICS – SUMMARY: A bruised hoof has cost NZ what looked like it would be NZ’s first medal. A Dunedin swimmer is in a
semi-final and a Roumanian weight-lifter is threatening to commit suicide if he is not allowed to compete.
EQUESTRIAN BLOW: Blyth Tait’s horse Ready Teddy showed no sign of injury yesterday but today a bruised hoof meant NZ was
out of the teams eventing competition. The leader of the team says the team is shattered. The Australian donkey’s won
the Olympic Gold for the third successive time. Individual equestrian events start tomorrow.
IS THE NZ TEAM A FAILURE: Bob McNeil – some will see it that way. But you have to remember this is only day 4 of the
games. What the medal prospects? In the rowing that is our best chance with Rob Wadell. Women’s hockey and soft-ball and
the yachting are still good prospects. Are we outclassed? I think that is increasingly true. The bigger nations have the
support the athletes need. The games are no longer about amateurs.
HOSTAGE DRAMA: Two women taken hostage in an Olympic Van today were later released.
OVERSTAYERS: Up to 8000 over-stayers may be eligible for an amnesty announced today. Well settled over-stayers and those
with family links can apply. For those who do not qualify the message is simple – leave NZ now. The PM confirmed there
are more than 25,000 overstayers in NZ, but has ruled out a softer approach. The immigration minister says there will be
no dawn raids however.
PIPE BOMBS: The explosion of two pipe-bombs in a Christchurch factory injured one man and shook neighbouring houses.
Police searched for more bombs.
PALMERSTON NORTH MURDERS: Police divers working on the Lundy mother and daughter murders today searched the Manawatu
river. Police say they are looking for something like an axe but would not say what they were looking for in the river.
Police want to talk to people seen in a yellow Vauxhall car and others seen vomiting in a utility. 40 officers are
working on the case. Police say most of it may be irrelevant but all needs to be investigated.
REST HOME MURDER: A elderly resident of a rest-home in Christchurch is to face a murder charge for the murder of a
93-year-old woman.
NEW SOFT DRINK FACTORY: L is a symbol of a by-gone era in Paeroa. But a Chinese company has built a new soft-drink factory there. Most of the
production will be exported to Australia. Kiwi Bottlers is 100% Chinese owned.
