JUNIOR DOCTORS STRIKE: The Junior Doctors Union says it is ready to call a nationwide strike if CEO’s of hospitals do
not agree to an offer negotiated earlier this week. Meanwhile senior doctors are warning that they will not be able to
cope if the strike goes nationwide.
FORENSIC BACKLOG: The country’s forensic scientists are being pushed to the limit by five homicide inquiries presently
underway. The ESR has put aside routine work to cope.
MURDERS: The police in Waikato and the King Country will continue murder inquiries. New inquiries are underway in
Taumaranui and Paeroa.
INTEREST RATES: Two more banks have lowered their home loan interest rates. Floating rates have been reduced by 0.3% by
the ANZ and the BNZ. Other banks had already dropped rates.
CONCORDE: A preliminary report into the crash of the Concorde has concluded that a burst tyre led to the chain of events
that resulted in the crash of the Concorde.
SCHOOL ZONING: The principal of Auckland Grammar says that 100s of years of old school links have been destroyed by
changes to the Education Act. Minister of Education Trevor Mallard says it is up to schools to decide how many people
from out of zone can get in.
WEST COAST: The West Coast Regional council has been accused of causing division over the trust being set up to
administer $120 million of compensation for the end of logging.
MASSEY UNI: Massey University is bracing for strike action at its three campuses. Management will have to make a
significant change to their approach says the union, if they are to avoid a strike.
NEWSPAPER PRICE: The NZ Herald is putting up its price to $1 and at the weekend to $1.50. Fran O’Sullivan says that
rising costs are partly to blame. INL do not plan to increase their prices.
