PETROL PRICES: Motorists are facing further big petrol price increases as a result of the fall in the Kiwi dollar. Petrol may rise up to five cents and diesel by up to seven cents.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT NZ: Wellington Mayor Mark Blumsky says he believes Local Government NZ can survive the collective resignation of its leadership team.
JUNIOR DOCTORS: More than 160 junior doctors at Waikato Hospital are walking off the job about now joining fellow junior doctors at Wanganui, Whangarei and Palmerston North.
ALGAL BLOOM: Scientists can’t say whether a virulent toxic algae bloom will spread further than it already has. The bloom has closed spat beds close to 90-mile-beach where baby mussels are found for seeding.
WILD FIRES: Uncontrolled bush-fires are converging to form super fires. In Montana a monster fire 103,000 hectares in size has formed. Politicians are blaming the federal government for the fires.
OLYMPICS TERRORISM: The President of the International Olympic Committee is confident about security at the games following the uncovering of a plot by Afghani refugees in Auckland to blow up a nuclear reactor in Sydney.
SIERRA LEONE: The UN office in Sierra Leone says it has been in touch with the “Westside Boys” who have kidnapped 11 British soldiers.
DVD WARS: Film cinema owners want to ban the hire of new DVD titles obtained through parallel importing which they say are undermining their ability to screen movies.
CANNABIS: The decriminalisation of cannabis will be debated by a youth Parliament sitting this morning.
