PETROL PRICES: They’ve got you over a barrel and the price has gone up again. BP says the weak NZ Dollar and soaring cost of refined petrol is to blame. Jim Anderton is not impressed. He says that the oil companies could absorb more of their costs. “I am rapidly coming to the opinion that the Oil Companies are parasites and that they are sucking the life-blood out of the economy”. BP disputes this and says it is absorbing some of the costs and only has 1 cent a litre margin. For consumers bicycles are looking more attractive. The Reserve Bank is asking people meanwhile not to ask for a pay rise to pay for petrol.
FOG: Auckland smothers under fog delaying dozens of flights in and out of Auckland Airport. An Ansett flight was sent back to Christchurch. A Singapore Airlines flight has also diverted to Christchurch. Two trucks and two cars crashed at Maramarua in the fog too. Eventually it went away.
FIJI COUP - MAHENDRA CHAUDHRY: A very welcoming handshake. The Fijian PM says he is disappointed at the reaction of some other island countries. The fate of 50 families in a refugee camp was also discussed today. The PM says that a decision will be made in 24 hours. Chaudhry says that George Speight should pay for bringing pain and suffering to Fiji.
HOPE SMART MURDER: The Navy has finished collecting data about the sea bed. It will now examine its data to decide whether to send down a remote vehicle to take photos and examine objects more closely. A relative of convicted murderer Scott Watson says the police are wasting their time and are trying to drive a nail into Watson’s coffin.
CLUB DRUG OVERDOSE: Duggie clubbers are playing russian roulette with their lives according to police. The advice has been given to people playing with designer drugs after three young people overdosed at the Power Station at 3am this morning. The Police think the trio were lucky following two deaths attributed to Ecstasy. The trio mixed Ecstasy with Fantasy and a third drug. All three have been released from hospital.
HELICOPTER CRASH: An elderly British couple were rescued off the coast of Queensland from a helicopter crash and did not want their names used. Some Japanese also caught in the crash were more injured looking.
VIDEO MADNESS: OZ Mardi Gras send-up video of soldiers dressed as nurses from Australia’s East Timor forces is causing a furore in Oz.
RUGBY: Three people have been dobbed in for throwing plastic bottles at Wellington’s new stadium. Wellington’s mayor says that Wellington needs to be tough and is proposing to ban anyone found guilty from the Stadium. The bottle that the South African ref was empty.
ALEC GUINESS: Actor Alec Guiness – obe wan kenobe (Star Wars) has died. Guiness was cast in roles in Dickens films, in 1957 he was in Bridge of the River Quai – for which he received an Oscar and a knighthood.
