DOVER SAMUELS: The former Maori Affairs Minister Dover Samuels says he believes political motives are behind new sex
allegations against him. Samuels is angry new rape allegations involving the woman have leaked into the media. He says
the allegations are fabricated. He doesn’t know who has leaked the new allegations however. Samuels says that some media
have said they learned of the claims through the PM’s office.
CANCER INQUIRY: The Cervical Cancer Inquiry in Gisborne is to ask for more time as it winds down to its scheduled end
date on Friday. Several witnesses have not been heard yet including 10 women affected by the misread smears.
MIDDLE EAST PEACE: President Clinton has returned to the US to take charge of the Middle East Peace talks. Despite
sounding an optimistic note before he left Okinawa nothing seems to have changed. The next 24 hours could be crucial to
the talks and Jerusalem is the key.
G8: Leaders of the group of 8 industrialised nations have promised to help poor countries. They have also agreed to do
their best to launch a new round of trade talks.
ROAD STANDARDS: The government is looking at increasing spending on roads to reduce road fatalities. Transport Minister
Mark Gosche says that NZ has substandard roads and the country needs to decide whether to spend more.
FIJI COUP: Talks resume today in Suva over who should be in a new government to be sworn in. Today is a public holiday
in Fiji intended to mark the 1997 constitution.
POLICE CHECKS ON SCHOOL STAFF: A proposal is suggesting that all school staff be subject to police checks to protect
students. Trevor Mallard says he thinks schools will not be happy at the increased cost.
TANA UMAGA: All Black management are giving no indication about whether All Black winger Tana Umaga will face
disciplinary action over a drunken night out in Christchurch.
TIGER WOODS: Tiger Woods has won the British Open Golf championship by eight strokes. Woods ended on 19 under.
