CAMP DAVID TALKS STALL AND THEN RESUME: President Clinton puts a brave face on no progress in the Middle East talks at Camp David. The Israeli delegation headed by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak was preparing to leave this afternoon, however early this evening President Clinton announced the talks would continue, as he departed for Japan and the G8 Economic Summit. US Secretary Of State Madeline Albright will take over Clinton’s role until he returns next week.
- FIJI CRISIS AND SANCTIONS CONTINUE: Foreign Minister Phil Goff called on the Fijian High Commissioner for a conference today to outline tougher diplomatic, sporting and “smart” sanctions against the interim Fijian regime which is composed of coup leader George Speight’s supporters. Meanwhile in Fiji, the deposed government of Mahendra Chaudhry met to discuss options of how to continue to represent Fiji.
- RONALD JORGENSEN SIGHTED LAST MARCH: One of the countries most infamous criminals written off as dead may be alive after a sighting of convicted last March murderer Ronald Jorgensen, which Auckland police are taking seriously. Jorgensen was convicted of a machine gun murder of two people in the 1960s.
- MORE EMOTIONS AT GISBORNE CERVICAL INQUIRY: There’s been another day of emotion at the cervical cancer Inquiry at Gisborne. The doctor who reread the slides today broke down under questioning from former pathologist Michael Bottrill’s lawyers. She had earlier graded Bottrill at an "8-out-of-10" for unacceptable reporting of cases.
- BOMB SCARE IN LONDON: In Britain a dissident IRA group is blamed for putting a bomb on an underground rail line in London, which police believed was an attempt to disrupt the pubic birthday celebrations for the Queen Mother.
- QUEEN MUM’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: Meanwhile, the birthday celebrations started for the 100th birthday for the Queen Mum. The royal mum said the occasion was one of “great joy” for her and told the crowd “God Bless You.” Singer Shirley Bassey became a dame and actor Barbara Windsor also received an award at the celebrations.
