FIJI COUP: Nine Fiji Indian MPs held at Parliament since May 19 have been set free. They were taken to the Red Cross for
a medical check and then sent home. Rebel spokesman Joe Nata says the release was a gesture of goodwill.
FIJI COUP: More than 40 tourists have left the resort of Turtle Island following a revolt by local landowners.
FIJI COUP: The Fiji trades-union congress says it would be disastrous for the country if George Speight were to
appointed PM. George Speight has said he expects all members of his group to be appointed in the new government.
MONOPOLY ELECTRICITY PROFITS: The author of a report that says consumers are being overcharged over $125 a year by line
companies. The report by Geoff Bertram and Simon Terry says that the accounting system used by line companies disguises
the monopoly profits of the companies.
MIDDLE EAST PEACE: President Clinton has opened the Middle East Peace summit at Camp David. The Israeli PM is now under
more pressure than ever to make a deal with the Palestinians. Clinton says his quests have the sheer guts to reach an
agreement. If a deal is reached both sides will then have to sell it.
OIL PIPELINE EXPLOSION: An oil pipeline has exploded in Southern Nigeria where villagers were stealing petrol in buckets
killing several of them.
ASIAN BUSINESS MIGRANTS: The government is to look at the sharp fall in Asian business migrants. Lianne Dalziel has
announced a pilot scheme designed to address the problem. Auckland’s Michael Barnett says the welcome mat for migrants
only goes so far.
REFUGEE DECISION: The majority of a group of asylum seekers who went on a hunger-strike at Mt Eden Prison may now be
removed from the country following an Appeal Court ruling. The nine asylum seekers affected are considering appealing to
the Privy Council.
OTAGO UNI FEES: Otago University says it is freezing fees this year. Steve Maharey has welcomed the decision but the
decision has given rise to warnings from other universities.
VARROA BEE MITES: Cabinet will decide this afternoon about what to do about the Varroa bee mite. The government has to
decide whether to try to eradicate or control the bee mite.
