DOVER SAMUELS – PM: PM Helen Clark has defended her sacking of Dover Samuels. Yesterday afternoon the PM sacked Samuels after he refused to resign.
DOVER SAMUELS – OPPOSITION: Opposition parties have criticised the PM’s actions. ACT and NZ First says the PM should have waited till the police inquiry was finished. National says the PM should have acted in January.
DOVER SAMUELS – HUI: A hui on Saturday at Waitangi will discuss whether Samuels should resign as the Northern Maori MP. Kingi Tauroa who organised the hui says Samuels should step down because he has lost the support of his colleagues.
AUCKLAND FLOODS: Auckland police have had a full motorway unit on duty dealing with floods in Auckland. Police say motorists should expect delays.
NORTHLAND FLOODS: Flood clean-up in the far north begins following flooding yesterday.
CUBAN BOY: Elian Gonzalez and his father are on their way home from the US to Cuba. Gonzalez has been the centre of controversy since last year. President Clinton says that what is happening is the law.
FIJI COUP: Fiji’s military government says a new agreement will have to be made with the hostage takers at the Parliamentary Compound. Speight says the military will invite a social backlash if they appoint a government by themselves.
SOLOMON ISLANDS: An ethnic militia group in the Solomon Islands is warning of an escalation in violence following a failure of the Parliament to form a new government.
INTERNET BANKING: One of the major banks is to become the first bank to charge for the use of internet banking. National Bank.
GAY SCOUTS: The US Supreme Court has held that homosexuals cannot be forced on the Scouting movement,
