It’s All Over Dover – Background, Jane Young, Tregerthan, MP Reaction – Waitakere Manhunt – Flood – Teenager Rescued – Danyon Loader Bows Out.
IT’S ALL OVER DOVER
- DOVER SAMUELS - Dover Samuels Statement following sacking - I have evolved from my experiences. I have made mistakes but I have learned. Wisdom is great in hindsight. I have lived through the trauma of the past few days – these are not double standards. They are standards of an ordinary NZer. A father. The heart and Wairua of the boy that was born more than 60 years ago in Matauri Bay is the same as the man who stands before you today. If I am expected to open my book of life for public scrutiny then natural justice demands that the other 119 members of Parliament should follow suit.
Jane Young: Also at the press conference Samuels said God was the final arbiter of his morals. On feelings about how he felt about Clark he said, she is the Rangitira and it is her power to give and her power to take away.
- BACKGROUND - Background to events including a translation of Samuels statement to the house in Maori.
- JANE YOUNG - Jane Young Live: Helen Clark says Prebble has Americanised politics . She expects the rules to be different from now on.
- TREGERTHAN - Rodney Tregerthan – says no one can feel vindication at this stage but he feels it is a positive thing for his neice.
- MP REACTION - Most Maori MPs showed support for Mr Samuels today. Maori MPs turned up today. John Tamihere was absent however. Beyer, Mahuta and others also interviewed. Winston Peters thinks there should have been a trial first. Parekura Horomia says he has what it takes for the job. But first he must win over his Labour Caucus colleagues.
WAITAKERE MANHUNT: Police are hunting for a gunman in the Waitakere ranges today. Manhunt began at first light today in poor conditions. Keith Ray London is wanted for the murder of a woman found dead with a gunshot to the head. Three shots were heard this morning in the Scenic Drive Area. Police say the area is now well contained. However road-blocks have residents worried. The missing man has four missing front teeth. The manhunt has been called off and people are warned not to approach London.
FLOOD: The Awanui river is four metres higher than normal. But the worst is now over say officials.
TEENAGER RESCUED: A teenager is rescued from mud flats by a helicopter.
DANYON LOADER BOWS OUT: Danyon Loader has retired. He says he is looking forward to life out of the pool. For 13 years his path has been a lane putting in training to perform at the highest level. And then the medals. And an emotional return to Dunedin. He had planned to attend his third Olympics but has now changed his mind and is pleased that he can get up later than 5am.
