MAORI TEENAGE BIRTHS: The Dominion leads today with a report that more Maori teenagers than ever are having babies – five times higher than Pakehas – and are helping push up New Zealand’s teenage birth statistics.
DESERTING MAJOR: The front-page photo story shows Major van der Ent and his girlfriend Rachel Simpson leaving the High Court yesterday. A report says that Army Officer Pedro van der Ent was freed yesterday after being held under 24-hour supervision on desertion charges at Trentham Military Camp since Wednesday.

- SCORPIONS: a report that the company that imports wine bottles from which up to 12 scorpions are believed to have escaped into a Hawke’s Bay winery, sent one of its managers to Portugal yesterday to review fumigation procedures;
- HUMAN EGGS IN MICE: a report that doctors say they have transplanted human ovarian tissue into the muscles or mice to grow human eggs in a technique that could one day be used to retain fertility of cancer patients;
- QANTAS NZ: a report that Qantas Airways is spreading its wings to New Zealand under a franchise arrangement with a consortium that bought Ansett New Zealand in March;
- WANGANUI MURDER: a report that Assault charges against two people were upgraded to murder ysterday afte the victim of an attack in central Wanganui died in hospital. Paul Ross Amer, 41, father of six, died following a fight early in the hours of Sunday Morning.
