GIRL INTO HIDING: The girl at the centre of the sexual allegations against the Maori Affairs Minister Dover Samuels has left her home in Northland and is moving to a Wellington motel. A cousin of the girl says the move is to escape a community backlash from Minister Samuels supporters and relatives.
MAORI SUPPORT: Meanwhile most Maori MPs have expressed their support for Mr. Samuels. A maori affairs select committee has met to discuss these allegation and a name calling incident involving John Tamihere and Waipareira Trust allegations.
FIJI CRISIS: The meeting between George Speight and the Fijian military is continuing today amid speculation that an accord will be signed to release the 31 political hostages.
PCA REVAMP: The former Labour Justice Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer says the legislation behind the Police Complaints Authority set up under his time in the Labour government are now old and due for a revamp.
AXE KILLER INQUIRY: A nurse who cared for a mental patient who killed his flatmate with an axe says he suspected Michael Jones was regularly using pornographic material.
PUMPING MORE OIL: The worlds biggest oil producers have agreed to increase production and have agreed to pump three per cent more oil at a meeting in Geneva. However the move is unlikely to decrease local pump prices by very much.
YOUTH DRINKING: A survey by the alcohol and liquor council says the drinking patterns of youth are still cause for concern.
HOSPITAL AILMENTS: The number of chlidren needing hospital treatment for winter ailments has concerned staff at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital.
MOTHER, SON MISSING: The police investigation into the mother and son who have gone missing in the Tararua ranges for over a week is focussing on gun-shots heard in the range a few days ago.
NURSING SUPPORT: The Ministery Of Health says it knows there is not enough resources going into nursing support and understands many in the sector are frustrated because recommended changes are not instituted.
