DEFENCE REVIEW: Defence Minister Mark Burton says the defence review provides a framework for investment in the armed
forces. Meanwhile a retired senior officer says that basing decisions around what can be afforded is the wrong way to do
things.
IMMIGRANT DEATHS: 58 illegal Chinese immigrants have been found dead in a truck enroute to the UK. UK Home Secretary
Jack Straw says there is no doubt that they are victims of traffikers.
MARK TODD: The Sunday Mirror is standing by its story on equestrian Mark Todd. Meanwhile other British media are not
showing a lot of interest in the story.
TRADE UNION BOYCOTT: Legal action may be taken by traders against a trade union ban on Fijian imports and exports. Up to
half a million dollars could be lost due to the week long ban. The government believes the union action is illegal.
TUVALU: The Tuvalu PM has asked NZ to consider resettling one third of the population of Tuvalu in the event global
warming leads to rising sea levels. The PM says she has passed on the proposal to Foreign Affairs.
KOREAN SANCTIONS: The US has officially eased sanctions against communist North Korea following the summit of the two
Kims. Washington will however continue to oppose lending money to North Korea because it is
GE INQUIRY: The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Genetic Engineering will begin its work today. The four commissioners
will hold a three day meeting this week. They have called for expert papers. The first series of public meetings will
begin next month.
TARARUA SEARCH: A search continues this morning for a mother and son lost in the Tararua ranges.
MICHAEL CAMPBELL: Michael Campbell’s tie for 12th in the US Open has improved his world ranking three places.
