DEFENCE PAPER: The government’s long awaited defence paper will be released today. It is expected to emphasise the
importance of re-equipping the army. The paper is going to cabinet today.
MARK TODD: Legal advice is being sought by Mark Todd over sex and drug allegations concerning him publishing in a UK
newspaper. Sex and drug allegations are new to the sport. Mark Todd is expected to be part of the NZ Olympic team.
FIJI TRADE BAN: Foreign Affair’s Minister Phil Goff fears that a NZ CTU trade ban on Fijian goods will lose to a
backlash against Fijian Indians.
ETHIOPIA AND ERITREA: Ethiopia and Eritrea have signed a peace plan sponsored by the OAU to end their war. 10s of
thousands of soldiers have been killed in the war that started in 1998.
SOCCER VIOLENCE: England could be thrown out of Euro 2000 if there is any more violence involving their team. FIFA meets
next month to decide who will host the next World Cup. England is competing against Germany and South Africa for the
prize.
ARTS POLICY: A major change in Creative New Zealand policy has seen it move to fund some arts organisations for extended
periods of 10 years.
MAORI SCHOOLS: The Ministry of Maori Affairs says that a decision to close two single sex Maori schools in Auckland is a
blow. The trustees are planning to close the schools and reopen a co-ed school in 2002.
BEGGS INQUEST: A coroner’s inquest into the deaths of Lauchlan Jones and Malcolm Beggs is being held this week. Jones
was being treated for mental illness when he killed his flat mate Beggs and then himself.
SCHOOL BUSES: The School Trustee’s Association is calling for changes in the way School Buses are used. They want fewer
students standing up and some students with seat belts.
SPORTS ROUNDUP: The Spanish soccer team has put its EURO 2000 plans back on track beating Slovenia. Michael Campbell is
on 8th equal in the US Open. Michael Shumacher has won the Canadian Grand Prix.
