FIJI COUP: The Fiji coup leader George Speight says he is confident the Fiji’s military crisis will be resolved on Monday. This morning Mr. Speight has announced he will accept the Great Council of Chiefs meeting decision to appoint either a civil regime or a military government on Monday.
DON ON FIJI: Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon has warned that the troubles in Fiji will not be over until the ethnic Indian Fijians views are considered.
PATIENT DIES: Health authorities are carrying out investigations into the death of a mental health patient who collapsed while being taken to hospital by police.
POORLY DOCTORS: The Medical Council has said that one in four doctors may be performing poorly because they are unwell. Doctors have a legal obligation to report on colleagues who they believe may be performing poorly because of illness.
FRAUDSTER SENTENCED: Anita Faiszandier, the woman convicted of grand scale fraud when she created fictitious accounts worth over 40 million dollars, has been given a three and one half year prison sentence in Lower Hutt.
POWER USE: A four year study of energy use show that New Zealanders use more energy than they have the means to pay for.
CLINTON IN EUROPE: The US President Bill Clinton is in Germany at the start of a four day visit, where he meets with German Vice Chancellor to discuss nuclear weapons. Earlier Mr. Clinton was in Israel to discuss peace in the Middle East.
ZIMBABWE ELECTIONS: Continued political intimidation by Government supporters is disrupting campaigning in Zimbabwe in the run up to an election next month.
CHILDREN RELEASED: Twenty-five children held hostage by a gunman at a daycare centre in Luxemborg were released after a sniper shot the man armed with a hand-grenade, and a gun.
WAPARIERA TRUST: Labour MP John Tamihere says there is no need to continue inquiries into the Waipareira Trust after two independent inquiries found no evidence of misuse of government funds.
