FIJI COUP – GREAT COUNCIL OF CHIEFS: The leader of the attempted coup George Speight has been told to give up his hostages by the Great Council of Chiefs. The President has taken on his reserve powers. The Chiefs will discuss a proposal today to replace the Prime Minister.
FIJI COUP – SPEIGHT: Meanwhile Speight has vowed to continue his fight. He says he no longer trusts Stitveni Rambuka. Back in NZ the PM Helen Clark says concern now moves to the fate of Fiji PM Mahendra Chaudrhy. Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon and the UN emissary from East Timor have arrived in Suva.
SOLOMON ISLANDS: Police from NZ and other Pacific Islands are being sent to the Solomon Islands to replace 40 police from Fiji which are now needed.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES: Two doctors say they are not surprised at the high rates of infectious diseases in NZ. One doctor says the immunisation rate remains low.
INTEREST RATES: The Real Estate Institute is disappointed with the ANZ Bank for raising its interest rates by 0.7%.
UNIVERSITIES: The Government has begun the process of putting a cap on the number of universities in NZ. The decision affects UNITEC in Auckland. National and ACT have attacked the move as being monopolistic.
EDUCATION EXPORTS: A new strategy to sell NZ education overseas has been welcomed by industry groups. A key part of a new strategy is to identify the market more clearly.
TRANSMISSION GULLY: Wellington City Council will vote today on whether to support a $250 million Transmission Gully motorway.
SNAPPER POACHING: Ministry of Fisheries officers are concerned about large amounts of snapper poaching.
