Waitara Farewells Shot Youth - Policeman Stabbed - Cancer Inquiry - Siamese Twins - Shared Needles - Legionnaires Disease - Yacht Found - Indian Drought
WAITARA FAREWELLS SHOT YOUTH: Waitara today buried Steven Wallace but not the hatchet. More threats made against police today. 1000 mourners attended the funeral. As Wallace's funeral took place further threats were made. A woman called the police station and said she was coming to the station with a firearm. The woman was located - she did not have a firearm. Wallace was shot early Monday morning after he went on a window smashing spree in Waitara. Labour MP Georgina Beyer who attended the funeral asked for calm. Alliance MP Willie Jackson says he thinks nothing will vindicate the police shooting. There are lots of signs of tension against police in the town.
POLICEMAN STABBED: A policeman has undergone surgery after being stabbed while attending an incident in Mangere of a naked man tapping on windows.
CANCER INQUIRY: The Gisborne Cancer Inquiry will not be naming the five laboratories that had low cancer reporting rates. Women victims at the inquiry say they want the names released. Dr Bottrill's rate of reporting abnormalities was 0.6%. Earlier the inquiry heard that five other labs had similar rates in a 1994 report. The Women's Health Action Trust wanted the information released. Not all the laboratories were concerned about having the information released. The HFA is investigating the other laboratories under instructions to make anything of "Gisborne proportions" public. The information is out of date and the laboratories are not in a position to defend themselves. Names of the labs will be coded when referred to in future.
SIAMESE TWINS: Faith and Hope are both doing well in National Women's. Both have their own lungs.
SHARED NEEDLES: A patient of an anaethetist who has admitted reusing syringes says she is not worried about being infected. Her comments are in contrast to patients affected in Australia. 590 patients are being contacted by Northland Health and offered the opportunity of tests for Hep B and C and HIV.
LEGIONAIRRES DISEASE: Two Kiwis may be suffering from Legionnaires disease following an outbreak in Melbourne at a new city aquarium.
YACHT FOUND: An airforce Orion has found a yacht in the mid Pacific.
INDIAN DROUGHT: A full scale emergency is in force in Northwest India. There has been no rain for three years in this part of India. Cattle and sheep are now dead throughout the region. Temperature has been seven degrees higher than normal. Reservoirs and wells are bone dry. In one case a dry village is now 20 miles from water. Many of the people caught in the drought have no water.
