Reserve Bank Standoff - Olympic Uniform - Guilt, Pleasure and Health - Cannibal Deportation - Drinking Problems - Inside Political Headlines - Editorial: West Coast
RESERVE BANK STANDOFF: The Dominion leads today with a report that a tentative recovery in share prices yesterday and soothing words from Deputy PM Jim Anderton seem unlikely to avert a potentially messy standoff in coming months over the Reserve Bank's interest rate policy.
OLYMPIC UNIFORM: The front-page photo story shows athletes modeling the Olympic uniform with sheep. The uniform has been designed "mainly by some of the athletes."
Also on the front page:
- GUILT AND PLEASURE: a report that the sheer enjoyment derived from simple pleasures could more than outweigh any damage they do to our health if we felt less guilty about them, scientists say;
- CANNIBAL DEPORTATION: a report that a Liberian man who admitted taking part in war atrocities, including murder and cannibalism, is facing deportation after living in New Zealand for four years;
- DRINKING PROBLEMS: a report that one in six people who go to their doctor have a problem with alcohol, a survey of general practitioners' patients has found.
Inside political headlines:
- Sutton wants ANZAC currency explored;
- Clark keen for gatekeeper to take over Hobbs office;
- Hepatitis compensation details kept confidential;
- Goff urges "smart" sanctions for Iraq;
- Competitive rating slips;
- Poll reveals support for instant pot fines;
- Newest dame - Evelyn Stokes (pictured) could be last of the line.
EDITORIAL - WEST COAST: The cost of ignorance is high.
