Gisborne Cancer Inquiry - ANZ Bank Fees - Scott Watson Appeal - Salvage Fails - Greenpeace Arrest - Singapore - Lord Of The Rings
GISBORNE CANCER INQUIRY: The pathologist at the centre of the Gisborne cancer inquiry is to face his accusers for the first time. Dr Michael Bottrill has seen the emotional testimony of women involved in the inquiry. "Over the last two days we have heard from these courageous accounts…. And a common theme the women clearly want to hear from him." He will make a statement to the inquiry on Thursday. Two more women gave evidence today. One woman felt there had been so many botch-ups she had lost face in the medical profession. Dr Bob Boyd from the Ministry of Health said there had been a "failure" in the cervical screening . The lawyer would not use the word apology at this stage. Dr Bottrill is not on trial here.
ANZ BANK FEES: New bank fees announced today by the ANZ have been met with cries of greed from the Deputy PM and consumer watchdogs. At ATM machines owned by other banks ANZ customers will pay an extra 50 cents. Other charges have also been raised. Some of the changes follow similar changes at WestpacTrust. Jim Anderton says All of these banks have made massive profits. NZers want their money invested in NZ not sent overseas as profits. Customers are not impressed some say they have chopped up their bank cards. Consumers Institute says customers should reduce the number of transactions they make if they want to save money.
SCOTT WATSON APPEAL: The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision on the Scott Watson Appeal. The families of victims and the accused are waiting anxiously. Watson's spirits are said to be high. Watson's lawyers have received a new report on the DNA evidence. The crown says this is not enough cause for a re-trial.
SALVAGE FAILS: A salvage attempt on a boat off the coast of Great Barrier is dangerous and difficult. A Micronesian artifact has not yet been recovered.
GREENPEACE ARREST: A NZer has been arrested in the Arctic protesting an oil project.
SINGAPORE: Singapore Air Lines and Air New Zealand are both mum on a $140 million purchase of shares in Air NZ by Singapore Air Lines. Qantas is currently losing out in the high tech aerial chess match. Air NZ shares have risen following a government okay to the deal.
LORD OF THE RINGS: NZ's best and worst kept secret. TV3 got glimpses of the filming of sword play practice on Mt Ruapahu. Clair Raskind movie publicist says attempts have been made to keep cameras away but not all successful. Some tourists able to film with video recorder shown. Owner of the "Hobbit" motor hotel in Ohakune is pleased. One fan is said to have enough footage to sell it overseas for $40,000.
