AIR FORCE ANGER: The Air Force is engaged in an aerial battle with the Government. Late this afternoon the Minister said
he wanted an explanation from the airforce on the F16s discussion in public. Pilot Greg Tyrell and others say they are
disappointed. The pilots say they. Pilots in Nowra say they are "gutted" by the decision. Minister says there are
conventions about staying silent and will be asking why they are not being observed.
F16S IN PARLIAMENT: Government attacked in Parliament over the F16s deal. Helen Clark says that the National Party
implies that NZ should be able to launch a full attack air, sea and land against another country. Jenny Shipley says
that the decision makes NZ a bunch of freeloaders. Clark says the government is going for breadth not depth.
AIR FORCE BASES: Two air-force bases under threat tonight, Hobsonville air base now used for helicopter training.
Super-yacht centre among the proposals for the land. Six kilometers away is Whenuapai - which is also being considered
for sale. Waitakere's mayor is considering the options. Regional council is concerned. At least one of the bases seems
likely to be sold.
OIL STRIKE: A major oil-strike in Taranaki could make New Zealand selfsufficient in oil says Swift Oil. The Rimu site
cost $7 million to develop. The find was made on a dairy farm. The oil however belongs to the government who has leased
the exploration rights to Swift. The government is entitled to 20% of profits.
4 DEAD IN FATAL CRASH: Four people die in road accident near Whangarei. Two children and two adults. Police say fog may
have contributed to the accident.
TODDLER DEATH PLEA: The civilian driver of a police car who killed a toddler on a pedestrian crossing in New Plymouth
says the sun was in his eyes. The driver plead guilty to charges relating to the death.
MURDER RETRIAL: New trial ordered in Auckland after judge says New Zealand Herald was grossly out of line with a report
of an appeal court decision concerning the accused.
OSCARS: Oscars found in Los Angeles dumpster. 52 of 55 missing Oscars found in a dumpster. Scavenger Willie Fulgear
jokes he had more Oscars than any of the stars for a while. Two courier employees arrested as possible thieves.
