EMPLOYER RELATIONS ACT INTRODUCED: The Employment Contracts Act is on the way out with the Government replacing the
industrial legislation with the Employment Relations Act. The bill entered its first phase in Parliament today with the
detail of the Act being released to the public. Many businesses say the old laws were working well, however many workers
disagreed.
EMPLOYER RELATIONS ACT DETAIL: The new law again allows unions to recognise unions ability to recruit workers in the
workplace. The Employment Tribunal is to be replaced with a cheaper body to rule on industrial disputes. Both employers
and unions must also give forty days notice before they lock workers out or strike.
REFUGEES SMUGGLED: An Iranian man tells of how he traveled for four months to journey to New Zealand and went to great
lengths to gain fake documents to gain entry into the country. Police want immigrants to come forward about obtaining
fake documents to allow them to arrest more members of an international refugee smuggling syndicate.
UN WATER REPORT: A United Nations report out today shows half the world’s population does not have access to an adequate
water supply. Three million children die of water contamination related diseases every year. The New Zealand gives $213
million a year for foreign aid, less than is recommended by the United Nations.
BLUFF OYSTER A parasite which devastated the Bluff oyster bed population in the early 1990s has been rediscovered this
year by a fishing trawler.
SNAKE FOUND: A shock for workers clearing rubble in a Wellington factory when workers found a live snake when they were
demolishing a building. A MAF spokesperson says it believes the snake was brought into the country in a nearby container
and escaped.
