DIVING DEATHS: Two divers are dead, another is missing and four are in hospital after an accident swimming in the Marlborough Sounds.
HAWKESBY PAYOUT: State broadcaster Telvision New Zealand has decided not to appeal an arbitration order to pay $6.5 million to former news reader John Hawkesby. Prime Minister Helen Clark says the decision was the correct one as the legal costs contesting the deal would only further increase the costs to the Government.
DEFENCE REVIEW: The Prime Minister is ordering a complete review of defence spending. She made the announcement when she arrived in Chile today. The review comes after defence spending projections have increased dramatically over the last few years.
SCHOOL FIRE: Eighteen people have been killed in a high school fire in a school dormitory in a the Pacific Island of Tuvalu.
ELLIS INQUIRY: The Government has announced a Ministerial Inquiry into the Peter Ellis case. However the lawyer for the convicted paedophile says the inquiry is too narrow in its focus.
TEAM NZ INTRIGUE: Sir Peter Blake confirms he hired a security company to find who was responsible for leaks regarding the financial dealings of Team New Zealand.
TEAM NZ IN DUNEDIN: Team New Zealand’s parade of Dunedin has just finished. Earlier in the day they flew to Christchurch and met thousands of school children. The team will stay overnight in the southern city and fly back to Auckland tommorrow.
