SUPER SCHEME LOSES SUPPORT: The Government has admitted it may not have the support in Parliament to pass its new
dedicated National Superannuation fund into law. Labour may have to enlist New Zealand First into supporting the deal
with the Alliance and the Greens both voicing doubts about the scheme.
SUPER BACKGROUND: Superannuation has been a political football for almost 30 years. The Labour Kirk government
introduced the first national super scheme in 1972 which was subsequently scrapped and replaced by a different scheme
National. Most recently National set up a Superannuation Task Force, which Labour recently scrapped for its dedicated
super scheme.
SUPER TASK FORCE – Two former chairs of National’s Superannuation Task Force have criticised the Government’s unilateral
move to establish a new national scheme saying Finance Minister Michael Cullen should find multi-party support for the
Government’s ideas.
