STUDENT LOANS SOAR: National says the government’s promises to reduce debt has backfired with students rushing to take up loans this year. 45% more students will take loans this year. Steve Maharey says the government promised to lower the cost of being a student and that is what it has done.
AUSTRALIAN INTIMIDATION: The Hillary Commission says that vandals who attacked the Australian Cricket Teams van in Dunedin should have applied their “internal handbrake”.
SNOWBOARDERS: The mother of one of three NZ Snowboarders lost in Japan says that she is disappointed with the effort put in by Japanese searchers.
NIGERIA: More than 300 people have died in Nigerian riots following the introduction of Islamic law in a northern city. Bodies of Christians and Muslims lie in the streets. Lots of mayhem and destruction.
ERUPTION: One of the Philippines most deadly volcanoes has erupted and is sending rivers of fire down its side.
LABOUR LAW CHANGES: Labour Minister Margaret Wilson has outlined the new Labour relations laws to employers in Wellington. Employers say they are frustrated that they are so much in the dark.
FAST FERRIES: Fast ferry operators are taking a cautious approach to a council by-law which is designed to minimise fast-ferry wake. Warnings from operators that slowing them down may mean prices go up.
AMERICAS CUP PARADE: Auckland Councillor is having mixed success in organising a parade to mark the end of the Americas Cup.
