AMERICAS CUP: The Dominion leads today with a report that three thousand pleasure boats and a nation watched yesterday as Team New Zealand’s Black Magic dominated the first race of the 30th Americas Cup yachting regatta on the Hauraki Gulf. To a national sigh of relief Black Magic strolled away to beat Luna Rossa of Italy by 1 minute and 17 seconds. The front-page photo shows Team New Zealand’s NZL60 returning to the viaduct basin after its victory.

- CRUISE SICKNESS: a report that two seriously ill cruise passengers were taken to hospital yesterday after a luxury liner made a mercy dash to Gisborne;

- AMERICAS CUP: a report that Team New Zealand’s easy Americas Cup win over Italy’s Prada ysterday restored a measure of national pride after an unhappy weekend for most other sports;
- AMERICAS CUP: a report that Michael Campbell is considering using Team New Zelaand read socks as golf club head covers when he goes head-to-head with Tiger Woods on Thursday;

- US AMBASSADOR: a report that the United States ambassador Carol Moseley-Braun says New Zealand should debate whether to adopt the US dollar. She said it was a debate that was very important but one which Americans should play no part;
- AVALANCHE: a report that three New Zealand snowboarders are missing after they were buried in an avalanche in a remote part of Japan’s Nagano ski region at the weekend;
- NATIONAL ANTHEM: a report that National sports bodies have welcomed the Government’s call for Maori and English renditions of the national anthem – and challenged the Government to go several steps further.
