ANSETT TAKEN: Air New Zealand has taken complete control of Ansett Australia, paying over 750 million dollars for the remaining fifty per cent of the airline after earlier buying the other half. To make the deal it has given 10 per cent stake in Air New Zealand to media baron Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp. Investors are not pleased with the buy up, and Air New Zealand shares have dropped sharply.
ANSETT TAKEN: The deal makes Air New Zealand the 20th biggest airline in world, with 149 planes, over 20,000 staff and $7.5 billion of assets. However Ansett New Zealand continues to remain a separate company from Ansett Australia as it is fully owned by Newscorp. Murdoch says the airline is likely to be sold soon.
CRICKET TROUBLE: Australian spin-king Shane Warne almost got arrested after a young fan took a photograph while the cricketer was smoking a cigarette. Warne grabbed the young man’s bag and refused to return it until police were called.
SUPERBIKER ILL: A kiwi superbike star Aaron Slight has been undergoing emergency brain surgury in Sydney to repair a burst blood vessel. The two centimetre blood-clot was only noticed this week
AMERICA’S CUP: Tomorrow the America’s Cup begins with Team New Zealand’s designers facing controversy over weather designers got their controversial keel right. Team New Zealand has decided that onboard umpires would not go on the boat because of a potential health hazard. Spectator boats will not be allowed to get as close as in the Louis Vuitton Cup and there will be a five-knot speed limit fixed in the Hauraki Gulf. Out on the harbour hundreds of boats, along with air force Orion planes, are celebrating the race’s imminent beginning.
CUP FEVER: There is Cup fever all around New Zealand with school children coming to the America’s Cup village from around the country. Elsewhere preparations for the Cup are in full swing. The Italians are also celebrating, and there are reports the Prada team are worried Italian television will pick up their swearing during racing.
BROOKE MARRIAGE: Zinzan Brooke will be celebrating his marriage on the Hauraki Gulf tomorrow with a private ceremony on Hauraki Island. After the honeymoon they will return to England where Brooke is coaching an English club side.
